Water Treatment Success
8 May 2013 Download Community Update 8 May 2013 Vista Gold’s water treatment program for mine affected water in Mt Todd’s Batman Pit has proven to be the best solution for dealing with the site’s environmental legacy. In October 2012 we implemented an innovative plan to raise the pH of more than ten gigalitres of contaminated water stored in the mine site’s open cut pit. Raising the pH causes the metals in the water to form a solid and drop to the bottom (precipitate) forming a thick sludge at the bottom. More than six months later the program has delivered results beyond expectations. New Site Manager Dave Evans

30 January 2013 Treatment of the 10 gigalitres of accumulated contaminated water stored in Mt Todd’s Batman Pit is now well advanced and considered the most significant activity for the project to date. We will add a further 1,000 tonnes of limestone and then 2,000 tonnes of quicklime to push the pH above a neutral 7.2. Community Updated Regularly

20 October 2012 Vista Gold has announced plans to treat contaminated water in the mine pit at Mt Todd to make it safe for release. The water, which needs to be treated regardless of whether mining goes ahead, presently is acidic and contains various metals in solution. The treatment involves pumping finely ground limestone into the body of the water, which will neutralise the acid as well as cause many of the metals in solution to sink to the bottom of the pit. |
